Age Of The Thurian Culture
13 March 2012 - 06:07 PM
Does anyone have any idea just how ancient the Thurian civilisations were by Kull's time? I.e., how long between the overthrow of the elder, "demon" races and Kull's ascent to the Valusian throne? We know the human kingdom of Valusia was already well established as of a thousand years earlier, as that was when King Eallal was slain by Serpent Men, according to The Shadow Kingdom.
The Elder Race
12 March 2012 - 11:15 PM
Mentions and appearances of members of the Elder Race occur in two Kull stories, Riders Beyond the Sunrise and The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune. They appear human, but are they? In the first story mentioned above, a member of the Elder Race strongly implies that his people existed before the Serpent Men, which are established to have predated the Thurian civilisation in The Shadow Kingdom. Does anyone have any theories on their origins?
Howard References In Marvel Superhero Comics
26 November 2011 - 01:23 PM
Not sure if anyone else here is aware of this, but in Marvel Comics' earlier Man-Thing stories there were frequent references to the Kull/Conan mythos. The character of Zhered-Na was a sorceress of pre-Cataclysmic Atlantis. She, along with the Atlantean king Kammuu both invoked Valka, a popular deity of Kull's time, and Zhered-Na is mentioned in one story as having been exiled to the land of Thuria, the main setting of the Kull yarns, for her preaching of Atlantis' impending destruction.
There's also some old Doctor Strange stories where Strange references both the Serpent Men and Valusia. As a fan of Marvel, I'm always chuffed whenever I read these nods to the creations of Robert E. Howard.

Kane's African Adventures
13 November 2011 - 11:34 PM
We all know that Kane had a number of adventures on the African continent. The African portion of Red Shadows (probably Kane's earliest trip to the Dark Continent) occurs somewhere along the Slave Coast, if I remember right, with The Hills of the Dead being not too far away (though I can't be sure). But whereabouts in Africa do The Moon of Skulls, The Return of Sir Richard Grenville, Hawk of Basti, The Children of Asshur, Wings in the Night and The Footfalls Within take place? I recall that Footfalls Within occurs somehow along Africa's eastern coast, so probably Kenya or Tanzania, or thereabouts.
Australia In The Thurian And Hyborian Ages
17 October 2011 - 12:34 PM
Does anyone have any theories as to the status of Australia in the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, and the Hyborian? The mythos actually don't seem to address much what lies beyond Khitai; we know that in Kull's time, the lands of Lemuria and Mu were located in the general region, and I know that in some SSOC stories by Roy Thomas, there's the realm of Yamatai which allegedly resembles ancient Japan somewhat (Isn't it also supposed to be a fragment of Lemuria?), but that seems to be about it.
