In Topic: Howard Days: June 12-13 2009

11 June 2009 - 06:44 PM

I'm getting to Brownwood Friday afternoon, I will probably not make the Friday night festivities but does anyone have directions to the Howard gravesite. I was thinking I would hit that Friday late afternoon.

Directions to the Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood :  Howard gravesite:

From LaQuinta/Blockbuster/Walgreens/CVS Intersection (all roads heading N-S-E-W)  Take Hwy 377 South 2.1 miles going through 3 redlights and crossing over RR overpass.  Cemetery will be on the right with a "tricky" entrance-- Look for Green highway marker.  Entrance
is between Water Express and Sterling Monument Co. on RIGHT.  Our cemetery volunteer group is hosting a reception at the gravesite both Friday and Saturday 9:30-2:00. We will have photos, and handout material and can also direct you to Tevis Clyde Smith's gravesite at Greenleaf.  We will also have maps to Novalyne's gravesite.  If you can't make the reception, the Cemetery hours open are from 8:00-8:00.  As you drive directly into the center of the cemetery, Howard's headstone is easy to see just to the right and will have a historical marker sign beside it.  Look for a wooden stake with a colored plastic flag on it.  Also, a covered "funeral canopy" should still be at the gravesite.

Directions to the cemetery are also available at the following hotels/motels:  Holiday Inn Express, LaQuinta, Days Inn, Hampton Inn and
America's Best Value (formerly Best Western)

Humphrey Pete's is my favorite restaurant in Brownwood! How can you not love a place with a sign featuring a pig dressed in overhauls with the motto: "It's Pig-Lickin' Good!"

While we didn't make it last year, Cheryl and I will be there this year. And, because I can, I'm officially announcing that Humphrey Pete's is the Howard Days 2009 Thursday Night Restaurant. We'll plan on being there by 7:00 p.m.
We'll gather together as many as we can and head down, since we normally meet up in Cross Plains. I can already hear the lamentations of the pigs!

Vonne, if you could get a room at HP's like you said, that'd be terrific. Unfortunately, I have no idea how many of us will be showing up. Usually our Thursday night get-together is 12-15(?) folks. I'll know more later after I chat up some of the gang. I'll also post this on the REH Days Info Page.

Man, I can taste those fried dill pickles already. Hope Barbara Barrett saves me some!
Now where'd I put my Humphrey Pete's hat?

I spoke to the management today, and they have a "special" room reserved for us Howard Fans Thursday June 11th at 7:00 p.m.  You must say the password " C O N A N " to get in.  Short and sweet.  I'll see you there!

This sounds very nice, and I'm sure it's appreciated by all of us making the journey.  I plan to be at the cemetery one of those two days to pay my respects, and I also want to take a look at the gravesite of Charlie Webb, one of the notches on the gun of John Wesley Hardin.

Brian, I visited Greenleaf Cemetery yesterday and located the gravesite of Charlie Webb.  Greenleaf's grounds supervisor had quite a tale to tell about the "final event"... Webb had traveled to Comanche to arrest JW Hardin, but found himself shot dead on the courthouse square by the very one he'd come to arrest!  Webb was a Mason and is buried in the Masonic Lodge area of the cemetery.  The pillar-like grave marker was once a white marble but through the years has acquired now an orange cast- quite beautiful.

It's reasonable to assume that this is for Howard Days:
http://www.rehupa.com/?page_id=48
That's June 12-13, 2009.

Welcome Vonne!

Thanks for replying.  YES!  The gravesite reception will be during Howard Days, even though we're not listed on the schedule of activities/tours.  We'll be at Greenleaf to WELCOME Howard Fans on Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13 from 9:30 am until around 2:00 pm.
Also, our FROG group welcomes any suggestions on how we can make it better for next year.
